Parker County is a quiet place, and if you’re from Dallas or Fort Worth you might only know the county for its annual peach festival. Generally, however, Parker County, which includes the cities of Azle and Weatherford, flies under the radar of local news stations. On June 1, Mark Upchurch helped to change this.
On the evening of June 1, Upchurch’s girlfriend came running down the driveway of their residential neighborhood screaming, “Mark set me on fire!” One of the neighbors drove her to the hospital after noticing severe burns covering her legs. After arriving at the hospital in Azle, the woman was then airlifted to Dallas with potentially life threatening injuries. Statements released by the hospital show that the woman was in critical condition and suffered first and second degree burns to more than 30% of her body.
Authorities found 32-year-old Upchurch wandering outside in the neighborhood and took him into custody. Upchurch is currently housed at the Parker County Jail on charges of Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury. Assault charges are elevated to aggravated assault when a deadly weapon is used in commission of the assault or, in Upchurch’s case, when the person causes serious bodily injury to another.
What stands out about this case is not that Upchurch set his girlfriend on fire, which is horrific in its own right, but what he told police when they apprehended him. When police confronted Upchurch he was yelling aggressively and told deputies he knew they were there “because what I did to my girlfriend when I lost my mind.” In his mug shot, Upchurch appears to be wearing the signature green suicidesmock given to inmates who may pose a threat to themselves.
While this sounds like an episode that might be spurred from drug use, Upchurch’s previous criminal history shows nothing worse than common traffic violations. Little additional information has been released on the incident, and Upchurch’s mental status, however, the moral of the story remains; try not to lose your mind.
